6William Hu
William Hu

An AMC medallist for five years in a row, William is again looking forward to the chance to make international friendships with people of similar interests at this year’s International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). William’s interest in maths stems from his experience with puzzle books as a child, commenting, ‘finding patterns in numbers and shapes has always been fascinating’. An accomplished pianist and composer (including being one of the first prize winners at the American Protégé International Music Talent Competition Spring 2014 and performing at Carnegie Hall), William is considering study in mathematics, and perhaps music, at university.

Charles Li
Charles Li

Charles’s interest in maths was sparked by participating in a series of events in years 7 and 8. These memorable events included the Melbourne University School Mathematics Competition, the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) and maths camp. Away from competitions and school, he enjoys orienteering and playing the violin. Charles is not quite sure what he will undertake at university but is sure it will involve further study in maths or science. Charles is looking forward to meeting like-minded people and making new friends at the IMO.

William Steinberg
William Steinberg

William’s interest in mathematics is driven by his love of the order in maths and the fact that answers are right or wrong, particularly when playing mathematical and logic games. His other passion is for learning languages. William has ambitions to pursue further tertiary study in mathematics with the hope to increase his knowledge and understanding. William is looking forward to participating on an international level and representing Australia, as well as meeting people from around the world who share similar interests.

Ethan Tan
Ethan Tan

As far back as he can remember, Ethan has enjoyed the mental challenge and elegance of mathematics and has been intrigued by its mysteries and intrinsic beauty. Ethan has aspirations to study science and mathematics at university and his greatest hope for the future is to invent something that will help people. In his spare time Ethan enjoys digitally composing music, playing piano and practising archery. He is most looking forward to attempting challenging and interesting problems at the IMO and meeting like-minded and culturally diverse students.

Haydon Tang
Hadyn Tang

On the back of last year’s bronze medal and his honourable mention, Hadyn is looking forward to the mathematical challenges this year’s IMO will present and being able to meet more people that share his interests. Hadyn has been captivated by puzzles and patterns ever since he was little, saying ‘I am fortunate to have teachers, family and friends who have been extremely supportive in encouraging me to pursue my passion for numbers’. Hadyn enjoys playing piano and double base, orienteering and strategy games. Further ahead he is considering further study options in mathematics or informatics, but would also like to explore physics and chemistry.

Guowen Zhang
Guowen Zhang

Guowen has been interested in the patterns in mathematics since he was very young. With a history of medals and prizes in the AMC, Guowen is looking forward to meeting and socialising with all the other students at the IMO. When he is not programming or inventing games, Guowen enjoys playing chess and the violin. In the future, he would like to become a physician, mathematician or programmer.
